This is just a mental exercise for me to better understand myself.
The purpose of the exercise is to define the type of person that I am, think about the type of person that I want to become and think about actions that I can am taking or can take to progress towards that Ideal.
Cool-headed
I have a quiet, calm and cool-headed personality. Ideally, I would like to be less quiet. Although I almost never act out my anger, when I do reach emotional extremes, I can act selfishly without care for others. Even when I am not angry, I don't hide the fact that I am more concerned over my own inner peace and comfort over that of other people's. Thus I often find myself mute and completely disinterested in others during social events, despite the social awkwardness that it causes. Because of this, I can appear to be distant and uncaring to others; In order to work hard on improving this aspect of my personality, I should and will actively try to talk more to people and develop a genuine interest in others. The first step is to learn the first names of the people that I meet and learn to talk to them about what interests them.
Direct in confrontation
Another thing that I am working on is forgiveness when I am criticized. When someone offends me directly, I tend to confront them directly and offend them back to even the score with my own criticism. Some people stop, but often others will only become more intense in their criticism. Clashing with these type of people is never worth it because even if you win, they will find a way to make you lose.
Easy-going
Generally, I am very laid back about life and lean towards the easiest route. However, when it comes to things that I am genuinely interested in, I will lose myself in researching that topic and I aim to improve my mastery over that subject so that I can flaunt my knowledge and skills. In other words, I can be very competitive. I need to take the easy way less as it is more often not the best way, and I need to be less obsessive on the things that interest me as it takes time away from the heavy work of improving myself.
Goal-focused
As I am very laid back, I do not worry about big plans and go with the flow, but I do believe that it is important to have big goals and progress towards them every day (even if just a bit). Although I like to keep my plans minimal because it gives me more time for action and more time to learn hands-on to meet my goals, when it comes to things that interest me, I often plan long and hard and do a lot of research. To improve myself here, the best thing that I can do is to have a plan that's simple, don't spend to much time working on the plan and spend more time doing the actions of the plan. In my case, the action is to meet face to face with more people and offer a free first meeting information session/ consultation.
Procrastinator
In order to better myself, I need to be more focused and set deadlines. When I decided to get into a career in financial services, I did a lot of research and made a lot of progress, but after understanding the bulk of the financial industry, my desire for learning has weakened over time. Now, I find myself procrastinating because finance is no longer something new for me. This is, in my opinion, my biggest weakness that I need to work on.
Analytical
I am very analytical and I like to think critically. This is good because it means that I am careful and skeptical, but the price that I pay for that is that my research ends up talking a lot of time and people may sense that I don't trust them. I almost never believe anyone until I do my own research, and I believe that this view of mine is how people should view their finance. That there is no trusting in finance. Ideally, you should understand your own investments' risks, guarantees, past returns, fees, benefits and etc. In fact, your financial advisor's job is to teach you. They are not there for you to pass over the burden of your own financial responsibility. Although it is a convenient thing to do, it is not the best thing to do if you want to become your best self. As someone who thinks a lot, I don't like to be influenced by feelings or tradition. But I do like to be influenced by stories and personal viewpoints. I usually won't completely shut out a viewpoint and like to use my brain to rationalize the good from the bad. One thing that I am trying to improve on is that I tend to disregard perspectives that cannot be backed up by facts and this is a problem in communication as many people cannot articulate their arguments through words, only through experience and wisdom.
Dreamer
Finally, I am a Dreamer. Dreamers are often seen as unrealistic and get very excited by new ideas and new ways of seeing the world, and they often take the path less taken. As a dreamer, I recognize that sometimes, rationality can hold you back. If I list out all the logical reasons why I will fail, it would seem like success is impossible. And so, I find that it is in my best interest to have faith in myself. Although I am an atheist, I have trained by the brain to have faith - to believe that things happen for me, not to me. I also have faith that I will attain extreme success and reach all of my goals in life and that there is magic in writing down your goals.
